Depending on Where You Are Headed, Safe Travelling May Be Difficult

Safety while traveling

Traveling safely should be your first priority when you are on your way somewhere. It can be as local as just driving to work, or something as far reaching as a vacation across the world.

There is only so much that you can do to affect safety while traveling, but if everyone makes the effort to support travel safety, then everyone else can enjoy safe traveling as well. It ultimately is a group effort, but if everyone agrees and makes the effort, traveling safety would not be so rare an occurrence.

How dangerous is travel, really? Should you be so concerned with traveling safely? Read on for a few numbers that may make you consider being just a little bit safer next time.

Americans travel an average of 44 miles everyday between automobiles and plane transit. That is about 15,911 miles a year of travel. Plenty of time to practice safety. But also many miles leading to accidents. For motor vehicles, there is an accident every 770,453 miles.

The numbers of yearly fatalities per vehicle puts everything into perspective. Every year there are 29,527 deaths by car or truck. There are 4,281 for motorcycles. Boats make up 793 fatalities, planes are at 543. And train deaths average less than 50 a year.

These numbers put airplanes at over 700 percent safer than motor vehicles and about 194 times safer than motorcycles. So, even if you are just going to another state, the best option for traveling safely is via airplane or train. And with gas prices the way they are, it could be cheaper too.

Weigh your options. Do not be in a hurry. Utilize best practices and think of the safety of other people as well as yourself. You do not just affect yourself when you are speeding down the asphalt in a several ton ball of steel. I always find that I drive more safely with my dog in the car, so I always say Drive like you have a puppy. Maybe that can help you to remember the safest practices for travel.
